witch doctors and britt daniel

"the world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides." /carl sagan

sceletium tortuosum is a tea that ryan picked up in a tea shop in hollywood yesterday. or wherever we were. the pushy witch doctor there asked if he planned on drinking it or smoking it, as both are effective methods of ingestion for this weirdly tripped out plant, which may have some pharmacological relationships to cannabis. california is great if you know what you're looking for. crazy witch doctor apothecarists abound (a)plentifully.

britt daniel at wonder ballroom in portland, oregon (9.5.08).

Still, I get the sense that Britt Daniel was the most popular guy in high school. Not in that captain of the football team kind of way, but the kind of guy who floats between cliques, excels at everything, is loved by cheerleaders, teachers and moms alike. He’s that guy.

Popularity of a Hallucinogen May Thwart Its Medical Uses

In 2006, Brett Chidester, a 17-year-old described by his family as a model student with no history of mental illness, committed suicide in Delaware at a time when he was apparently smoking salvia several times a week...Delaware’s Legislature immediately banned salvia by passing a bill it called Brett’s Law.

Many scientists believe salvia should be regulated like alcohol or tobacco, but worry that criminalization would encumber their research before it bears fruit. “We have this incredible new compound, the first in its class; it absolutely has potential medical use, and here we’re talking about throttling it because some people get intoxicated on it,” said Dr. John Mendelson, a pharmacologist...

Evolutionists Flock To Darwin-Shaped Wall Stain

"I brought my baby to touch the wall, so that the power of Darwin can purify her genetic makeup of undesirable inherited traits," said Darlene Freiberg, one among a growing crowd assembled here to see the mysterious stain, which appeared last Monday on one side of the Rhea County Courthouse. The building was also the location of the famed "Scopes Monkey Trial" and is widely considered one of Darwinism's holiest sites. "Forgive me, O Charles, for ever doubting your Divine Evolution. After seeing this miracle of limestone pigmentation with my own eyes, my faith in empirical reasoning will never again be tested." Added Freiberg, "Behold the power and glory of the scientific method!"

music: spoon - love ways

lil five-song ep from 2005. after series of sneaks and before girls can tell. series of sneaks and before, especially telephono, are to spoon what pablo honey is to radiohead. it's really good rock music, but still kind of generic. not so generic that it's forgettable, but more in that it's accessible and instantly likeable by pretty much anyone who listens to it. but after pablo honey came the bends, which saw radiohead getting kinda weird and experimenting with synths and more composed, full bodied songs. spoon went sort of the same way, and girls can tell really saw spoon entering into a completely likeable pop phase of awesome rock music. a friend of mine told me that spoon reminds him of david bowie in that they both represent and reflect sophistication. i replied that goofiness is what comes to mind for me. but both are true. one can be goofy and sophisticated. i'm not so sure how goofy radiohead is--certainly there will be blood is some kind of opposite of goofy--but they definitely know how to make music that everyone likes.
